As a child I loved it when my mom made my all time favorite breakfast (before I discovered waffles), which were french toast. Which are called ‘wentelteefjes’ in Dutch which literally translates to turn over bitches. My mom’s secret ingredient for a perfect crust was adding some caster sugar to the batter. Which we gladly did again for our homemade sourdough and they turned out brillantly. If you haven’t got homemade bread of course you can use any bread you prefer, but we’ve got to say we love the taste sourdough gives to this recipe. We are curious to know what you guys think! Happy Waffle Wednesday.
French toast sourdough waffles
4 slices of sourdough
50g caster sugar
100g fine sugar
4 tbsp. cinnamon
We love making them with vanilla ice cream and crushed blueberries & raspberries, preferable also frozen for a fresh breakfast, lunch or even dessert.
Grab a low bowl where the slices of bread will fit in. My mom used my Jurassic Park lunchbox for this, but something similar will do. Mix together the milk, eggs & salt. While mixing add the caster sugar and one tablespoon of the cinnamon. Heat up your waffle iron. Dip the slices of bread in the batter and leave them in for about a minute. Bake them until golden brown and put them on a plate. Mix together the sugar and the rest of the cinnamon and sprinkle all over the waffle on both sides. Continue until done.
Serve them with the ice cream and fruit and enjoy!
